# In the middle, there’s also an overflow tube that drains water out into the bowl if it gets too high.
2# Catch it in the act. If you’ve waited long enough after flushing and the toilet hasn’t quit running, lift the tank lid and look in.
3# Close the flapper. If the tank is not full and it is not filling, chances are that the flapper is stuck open. Reach in and close it with your hand. If it sticks repeatedly, look for the cause. Make any necessary adjustments.
* Is the chain catching on something?
* Is the flapper catching on the chain?
* Is the flapper wedged open on its hinge?
* Is the flapper aligned with the opening?
* Is the flapper simply just old and stiff (and needs replacing)?

No matter how you adjust the float, adjust it so the tank stops filling when the water is about an inch (2.5cm) below the top of the overflow tube. A leaking flapper can be caused by excess pressure if the tank level is too high, even with a brand new replacement.

Over time, this inexpensive rubber part decays, or minerals build up on it. Cleaning may work to remove mineral buildup, but it’s usually best just to replace the whole part. There are a few standard kinds. Take your old one with you to the hardware store if you want the comparison to get the right size.
To perform the replacement, simply close the valve sticking out of the wall under your toilet tank.
# Flush the toilet. If the valve is completely closed, the tank will not refill and you will not hear water running after the tank empties.
# Pop the old flapper off its hinges, disconnect it from the chain, and pop the new one into place.
# Run a finger carefully around the rim where the flapper seats. Remove any uneven buildup of minerals that might cause a leak. There might be a slime buidup around the flapper seat and flapper itself. While replacing the flapper use a sponge with bleach to clean the flapper seat.
# Don’t forget to open the valve all the way when you’re ready for water again.
# Try flushing a few times to make sure the chain is the right length for the new flapper. It should open when you push the handle and then drop closed all the way when the tank empties. You may have to trim and adjust the chain by trial and error. Also, make sure that the flapper aligns properly with the opening.
6 # Troubleshoot other possible problems. Occasionally, something else will cause water to drain slowly into the tank.
* The small rubber fill tube leading from the valve to the overflow tube and sometimes the valve itself can act as a siphon. In that case, adjust the valve height or tube height up, or adjust the water level down.
* The valve itself will not stop the water completely. Some valves can be opened and the rubber seals replaced. If not, you may need to replace the whole valve.
* One or more of the non-rubber components may break in the toilet’s water valve mechanism, such as the lever connected to the plastic ball that shuts off the water by pressing down on a button as the water level rises. How to Fix a Damaged Zipper

How to Flush e Drain a Water Heater

Before draining and flushing your water heater, turn off the gas or electric power (depending on whether it is a gas or electric water heater) and let the water cool a little. Close the incoming water valve and attach a hose to the drain valve to run the water into a large bucket or to a drain or the outdoors.

Open the drain valve and open one hot water faucet somewhere in the house to let in air. When all water has drained from the water heater, turn the cold water valve on and off until the water from the drain runs clear. Then close the drain valve and the hot water faucet, open the cold water valve, and turn the water back on.

How to Resolve Virtual Memory Problems on Windows XP

virtualmemory.jpgWhenever you’re running Windows XP, and see a message saying “Your system is low on virtual memory”. Windows is increasing the size of your virtual memory paging file .” Unless you have very little physical memory (RAM) in your system, this message is indicative of a buggy application with a memory leak. A memory leak is a common problem caused by poorly written or poorly debugged applications where they continually use more and more memory until you shut down the program, end the process manually or restart Microsoft Windows. The virtual memory, also known as a page file or swap file, is a file on your hard drive (C:\pagefile.sys by default) that Windows and applications use in addition to physical memory (RAM) as needed. The default and recommended size of this file is 1.5 times the amount of physical memory. Virtual memory is the sum of physical memory and the page file. So if your computer has 512 MB RAM, it will have a 768 MB page file by default, for a total of 1.25 GB of physical + virtual memory. How to find the source of the problem. Firstly, you need to determine which application is causing the problem. Click Control-Alt-Delete to bring up Task Manager (on certain XP Professional configurations you’ll need to click the Task Manager button after hitting Control-Alt-Delete). You can also access Task Manager by holding down Control and Shift and pressing Escape. After go to the Processes tab in Task Manager. Here you will see a list of all the processes (applications or parts thereof) that are running on your system. You will see the memory usage here, but in my experience this very rarely has anything to do with problems running low on virtual memory. Hit View and select columns. Windows Task Manager View Menu. Check the Virtual Memory Size box, as circled in the screen shot below and click OK. Windows Task Manager Virtual Memory Size. Now you have a VM Size column in your Processes tab. Click the top of the VM Size column (as circled below) twice to arrange the processes by their VM Size from largest to smallest. Windows Task Manager: Processes. You’ll see in Task Manager that Mozilla Firefox is taking up the most virtual memory at about 237 MB, with Internet Explorer the next biggest at about 81 MB. (the number of KB divided by 1024 equals MB) For both, this is the consequence of leaving them open for more than a week straight. Almost every application will use more memory the longer you keep it open, though some are worse than others. This is one reason that Windows becomes more and more unresponsive the longer you keep it running, and why you end up eeding to restart your computer periodically. Once you determine which process is using more virtual memory than it should, you need to determine what the process is. Some are pretty obvious, like winword.exe is Microsoft Word, iexplore.exe is Internet Explorer, and so on. Others aren’t so obvious. The best way to determine the source of a specific process is to use a search engine to search for the Image Name as shown in Task Manager. Resolution. Now that you know which application is causing the problem, let’s resolve it. One common thing to try is to uninstall and reinstall the offending application if possible. Searching the Internet, and checking the support site of the software vendor would be the next two steps I would try. Without knowing which application is at fault, it’s difficult to recommend a specific solution.

How to Use BitTorrent

The word BitTorrent (also known by the abbreviation ‘BT’) is a protocol that allows you to download files quickly and more efficiently. It is a peer to peer protocol, which means you download and upload to other people downloading the same file. BitTorrent is often used for distribution of very large files, very popular files and files available for free, as it is a cheap, fast, efficient way to distribute files to users like you. µTorrent is a BitTorrent client. A ‘client’ in this case is a computer program that follows the rules of a protocol. For example, HTTP (HyperText Transfer Protocol) is the protocol used to download web pages and other content - like this page - and your HTTP client (or browser) is the program you use to get those web pages. Some popular browsers include Microsoft Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome and Safari. Just as there are multiple web browsers, there are multiple BitTorrent clients, and µTorrent is one such BT client.
How do I download files using BitTorrent? Just like you need a URL like ‘www.google.com’ to go to a web site and download content, you need a ‘torrent file’, a small file that tells the BitTorrent client the necessary info to download the content you want. This is generally obtained from a torrent website. Many websites offer torrents as one method of downloading files. For example, OpenOffice.org, a free alternative to Microsoft Office, can be downloaded using BitTorrent. Other sites, like legaltorrents.com, offer torrents of all kinds of things - these sites are just repositories of torrents and usually don’t actually create any of the content available. They are known as torrent indexers. Once you’ve obtained a torrent file, you simply need to import it into µTorrent. There are several ways of doing this.
* Drag and drop the torrent file you downloaded onto µTorrent’s window.
* Choose to open the torrent file instead of saving it to your computer. If you have associated µTorrent with .torrent files, this will work. µTorrent asks on first run if you want to do this, but if you said no, you can go to Options, Preferences and click button labeled Associate with .torrent files to reassociate it. But before you start downloading, make sure you’ve followed the µTorrent Setup Guide. It doesn’t take long and will help ensure that your torrent experience is faster and more consistent. µTorrent finished downloading, but now it says it’s Seeding. What does that mean? Seeding is where you leave your BitTorrent client open after you’ve finished your download to help distribute it (you distribute the file while downloading, but it’s even more helpful if you continue to distribute the full file even after you have finished downloading). Chances are that most of the data you got was from seeds, so help give back to the community! It doesn’t require much - µTorrent will continue seeding until the torrent is removed (right click the torrent, then hit Remove). Proper practice is to seed until the ratio of upload:download is at least 1.00. Where do I find files to download? Most people use search engines, such as Google, and add the term “torrent” to their search. BitTorrent can be used to deliver any type of file. BitTorrent is purely a content distribution method and (just like a web browser) does not incorporate any technology to differentiate between content that is legitimately shared and content that is pirated. Remember, anybody can see your IP address when using peer to peer clients (like µTorrent), which identifies your computer on the internet. How to Install a Window Air Conditioner

It’s almost time again, new season and time for the use of air conditioners. The mercury is rising and the humidity is making it feel even hotter. It’s time to install that air conditioner! If central air conditioning is too expensive to consider, then a window unit should be enough to cool things down. Once you have the air conditioner home, it will take just minutes to install it in the window…and you’ll be on your way to a cool night’s sleep!
Step 1
Install the mounting brackets onto the windowsill. Screw one end into the sill. Adjust the center screw on the bracket to level the air conditioner.
Step 2
Open the window fully. Slide the air conditioner over the sill and onto the mounting brackets. Close window to the top of the air conditioner casing.
Step 3
Pull out the extensions on either side of the air conditioner until they touch the sides of the window. Once fully extended, drill small holes into the window sash and use screws to fasten each extension to the sash.
Step 4
Secure the sashes to each other with angle brackets, if brackets are supplied by the air conditioner manufacturer. Use a strip of foam to insulate the gap where the two sashes meet to prevent the cool air from seeping outside.
Step 5
Make sure to tilt the air conditioner slightly away from the window to ensure proper water drainage. Caulk the unit outside around the air conditioner. Then plug in the air conditioner. It’s now time to cool off!

Why Light Bulbs Burn Out So Quickly

lightbulbs.jpgLight Bulbs are supposed to last longer, but I am having problems with lightbulbs burning out in a matter of months. The bulb package should have an average life expectancy printed on it. Usually all the typical light bulb is good for roughly 900 hours. At 10 hours a day that’s three months. At 24 hours a day it’s a little more than a month. If you have 25 bulbs in your house burning an average of three hours each day, a bulb will burn out every twelve days, on average. However, if you compute the average life of your bulbs and discover it last less than the manufacturer’s rated life, then probably you are having
* An over-voltage in your house. Occasionally this causes more serious problems. You can get a cheap multimeter at Radio Shack. If the voltage is 125V or higher, talk to the power company about it. 7 or 8 extra volts on a 120V line will cut the bulb life expectancy in half. If it’s a slight over-voltage, you can buy special 125V or 130V bulbs, though sometimes they’re hard to find.
* Also, you may be experiencing too high a wattage bulb in too small an enclosed fixture (such as a globe), the heat can’t get out–the bulb burns too hot, leading to short bulb life.
* Recessed lighting fixtures often get covered by attic insulation. This blocks the intended ventilation method–heat can build up around the bulb, causing short bulb life.
* A vibration problem. Such as, bulbs under a heavily used stairway, on or near an out of balance bathroom or ceiling fan, or near a door that gets slammed, or kids upstairs jumping, etc. You can buy special shock resistant, also called “rough service” bulbs, for this situation, or try one of the new compact screw-in fluorescent bulbs. Sparkling. Intermittent electrical contact can cause flickering. It’s like turning the light on-and-off constantly, consequently will reduce bulb life. Also, it can be caused by a bad light socket, or a poor electrical connection somewhere in the wires leading to the light (most likely right at the fixture). Shining can cause the bad connection to get hot and possibly start a fire. If you don’t locate the cause of the flickering and it affects all or many lights, you could have a bad neutral connection — a dangerous situation. Another indication of a neutral problem; as larger appliances (washing machines/dish washers) cycle, lights will get quite noticeably brighter or dimmer (minor changes in intensity are normal). If you suspect this problem have either the electric company or an electrician check it out.

This means taking the time to really listen to what they say or do. Make sure their teacher knows about the death as well.
