How to Stay Hydrated During the Summer Months
It’s that time of year again, where the beach bodies hit the sand and the kids need extra sunscreen. The kids and family also need more hydration. It can be difficult to stay hydrated during the hot summer months, but it is possible. There are many things you can do to keep you and your family hydrated during the summer season
For one thing, cut back on caffeine. Coffee and soda are the number one reasons for dehydration during the summer months. When you are thirsty, you probably reach for a can of your favorite soda, not realizing that this substance is a diuretic, meaning that it squelches any meaningful hydration that is already in your body. Also, consumption of too much caffeine can make you jittery anyway, and who wants to be jittery at the beach when you are supposed to be having a good time? I personally do not give my children caffeinated drinks; but some parents do. If you let your children have soda, try to cut back on the caffeinated brands, and when you do offer them soda, make sure it is the light colored type, like Sprite or 7-Up. Darker colored sodas can often be even more detrimental to one’s health, so drinking lighter colored sodas, preferably without caffeine is one of the best methods to staying hydrated during the summer months.
Another way to keep your body hydrated that you have probably heard a million times over, is drink more water. If you are anything like me, you probably hate water. Luckily, though, for those of us that do not like water, there are flavored waters to keep us hydrated. There are even flavor packets that we can now add to our favorite bottled water that not only add great flavors, but some also add vitamins.
I will admit that I am a caffeine-aholic, and I am not to many times found without my Mountain Dew in hand. However, I have found a water flavor packet brand that satisfies my caffeine cravings and my need for water during the summer. It is made by Crystal Light. It is called Strawberry Energy and it is a strawberry flavored water packet that contains caffeine. So although caffeine is not meant for consumption when it is extremely hot outside, at least I am satisfying my body’s need for water.
